I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. As a child, I would spend hours drawing colorful pictures and writing stories. I loved working with color and shapes, but what really drew me in was the ability to tell a story with my art. It wasn’t until much later that I realized how important it is for us artists to find our message, or “brand” as some like to call it today.
Your message is your brand.
Your message is the reason why you do what you do. It’s your reason for being an artist. It’s why people will buy your art, and it’s what will differentiate your work from other similar artists’ works in the marketplace of ideas.
If you’re unclear about this message, then it can be hard for others to understand what makes your work unique and valuable–and that includes potential buyers and collectors!
Your message is the reason why you do what you do.
Your message is the reason why you do what you do. It should be clear to you and others, consistent across all your work, and something that you are passionate about sharing with the world.
Your message can be anything from “I want people to feel powerful” to “I want my art to make people think about how they interact with their environment.”
Sometimes others can help you find your message.
Sometimes it’s not just about you and your work. Sometimes other people can help you find your message.
- Listen to others: Whether it’s family, friends or even strangers on the street, there are always people around with something to say about what you’re doing–and sometimes that feedback is exactly what you need to hear.
- Get feedback from others: You don’t have to take every piece of advice given by others as gospel (especially if it’s coming from someone who doesn’t know much about art), but getting a variety of opinions will help broaden your perspective and allow for new ideas and possibilities in how best to express yourself through art.
- Ask for help: If all else fails then ask someone who knows more than yourself! Whether it be an expert in their field or someone who has been through similar circumstances before; there are plenty of resources out there ready willing & able help out if only asked nicely enough 🙂
Sometimes you have to look deep inside yourself to find your message.
- Sometimes you have to look deep inside yourself to find your message.
- You have to be honest with yourself and open to what you find.
- You have to let go of what isn’t working, even if it’s something that was once important or meaningful for you.
Having a clear message will help you communicate it more effectively to the world.
It is important to have a clear message, because it will help you communicate your message more effectively to the world. Your audience has many options and can choose to spend their time on other things if they don’t feel like your work is worth their attention. If you want people to pay attention, then it’s essential that your artwork stands out from everything else out there in terms of its quality and relevancy. And this begins with finding a unique perspective or point of view for yourself as an artist:
Finding your message as an artist is important
Your message is the reason why you do what you do. It’s the core of your brand and identity as an artist and it will guide the decisions that shape your career.
Finding your message is often difficult, but once it’s discovered, everything else becomes easier:
- You know what kind of work to create
- How to position yourself in the marketplace (e.g., through marketing)
- What kinds of clients/partnerships make sense for this particular message
Now that we’ve gone over how to find your message as an artist, it’s time to get out there and do it. Remember: finding your message is a process of exploration and discovery. You can’t force it or else you’ll end up with something fake and empty instead of authentic artistry. But if you keep working at it, one day soon you’ll stumble upon something amazing–and then all those years spent searching will finally pay off!
